The ELFA Nominating Committee has named the following individuals to stand for election by the ELFA membership. If elected, all nominees will begin their term of service at the conclusion of the ELFA Annual Convention, Oct. 23–25 in Palm Desert, California. Each ELFA member company may cast one vote for each nominee. On Aug. 12, voting materials and instructions will be emailed to each member company’s key contact, who may then vote via confi dential electronic ballot on the ELFA website. The voting will conclude Oct. 5 at 5 p.m. ET.
David Schaefer
Chairman-Elect
Schaefer is the founder and CEO of Orion First, which provides full service commercial loan and lease portfolio management, scoring and decisioning products, commercial collection services and strategic advisory to the small business commercial lending industry. He is also the founder and CEO of Mintaka Financial, a commercial fi nance company specializing in serving the needs of small businesses across the United States through an exclusive network of originators that share ownership in Mintaka. Schaefer is active with ELFA. He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the ELFA Board of Directors and past Chairman of LeasePAC, the industry’s federal political action committee.
Larry Smilie
Vice Chairman
Smilie is a Managing Director for Global Leasing at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. In this role, Smilie is responsible for Corporate, Commercial and Business Leasing Originations, Syndications, Global Investor Relationships, Global Portfolio Trading & Acquisitions, Indirect Originations, Structuring & Transaction Management and Investment Management. Smilie received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of California, Berkeley and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from San Francisco State University. He served previously as a Director on the ELFA Board from 2010 to 2014.
James Cress
Director
Cress is the Vice President and General Manager of Stryker Flex Financial, the captive finance arm of Stryker. He joined the company in 2008 and is responsible for its equipment finance operations in the United States, Europe and Canada. Prior to joining Stryker, he was Senior Vice President and Vendor Business Unit Director for eight years at National City Commercial Capital in Cincinnati. There he managed operations for multiple vendor markets including healthcare, office equipment, technology and manufacturing. He also spent several years at US Bank as a Vice President in Small Business Banking. Cress has been an active member of ELFA since 2000. He served consecutive terms on the Captive and Vendor Finance Business Council Steering Committee. He has also been a participant in Capitol Connections for the last five years and is an ELFA Guest Lecturer at Michigan State University. He has a B.S. in Economics and an M. S. in Executive Leadership and Organizational Change from Northern Kentucky University.
Marjorie Krumholz
Director
Krumholz is a partner at Thompson Coburn LLP. Her law practice spans more than 30 years representing lenders and lessors in structuring, negotiating and closing lease and conventional finance transactions. She is nationally recognized for her maritime finance experience. In addition, Krumholz represents banks in trade credit transactions that support the export of goods and services from the United States and are guaranteed by the Export- Import Bank of the United States. She also has experience in financing vessels through the Maritime Administration’s Title XI ship financing program. Krumholz serves as Managing Partner of Thompson Coburn’s Washington, D. C., office and Vice-Chair of the firm’s Federal Practice Group. She is a Fellow of the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers; Co-Chair of the Air, Rail, Marine Subcommittee of ELFA’s Legal Committee; and Chair of the Marine Financing Committee of the Maritime Law Association of the United States. She received a B. A. from the University of Rochester and a J.D. from George Washington University.
Matthew LeSage

LeSage is the Chief Commercial Officer for Wells Fargo Equipment Finance. Prior to Wells Fargo, LeSage spent 24 years at GE Capital, where he held numerous roles across their consumer and commercial fi nance divisions including Chief Commercial Offi cer, GE Capital Equipment Finance, and Managing Director Vendor Programs for GE Capital Vendor Finance. He also recently served as Vice Chairman of the Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation and has been a Trustee for the past six years. LeSage received a Bachelors in Business Administration from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A from the University of California Berkeley.
Brian Madison
Director
Madison is President of Trinity Industries Leasing Company, the captive railcar operating lessor for Trinity Industries. He recently joined Trinity from KeyBank, where he was Executive Vice President at Key Equipment Finance, overseeing manufacturer and vendor alliances across information technology, healthcare, government, industrial and water and clean energy market segments. He possesses more than 25 years’ experience in financial services, working with leading equipment manufacturers and software providers to provide customer focused solutions. Prior to KeyBank, he was General Manager of Microsoft Financing. He has held extensive senior-level responsibilities in commercial finance at Citigroup, Mellon Bank and GE Capital. He earned a B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Washington.
Robert Neagle
Director
Neagle is President and General Manager of the Merchant Finance Division of Ascentium Capital LLC. In this role, he is responsible for Ascentium Capital’s entry into the payments industry and the general direction of the business and its P&L. Over the past 30 years, he has held senior management roles with leading companies in the equipment leasing and fi nancing industry, including TriContinental Leasing (later Bell Atlantic Capital), AT&T Capital, CIT, First Data Corporation and First Data Global Leasing. Neagle is currently serving a second term as a Trustee of the Equipment Leasing & Financing Foundation and is a member of the Research Committee. In addition to serving on marketing and captive committees over the years, and publishing articles in the JELF, he has served as a member of the Editorial Review board of the Journal of Equipment Leasing and Finance since the mid-1980s. He is a Ph.D. graduate of Loyola University Chicago.
